Las Vegas, the 9th Island?

Many people refer to Las Vegas as the 9th island. In other words, there are 8 Hawaiian islands, but Las Vegas is often thought of the unofficial 9th island. There is a large Hawaiian population at UNLV, which is represented in various settings.

Many Hawaiian students, in the hope of feeling more at home, have joined the Ewalu Club. This club is dedicated to bringing the Hawaiian culture to the mainland, by creating traditional Hawaiian events right here in Las Vegas, as well as hosting fundraisers throughout the semester, including their annual Luau and selling homemade spam masubi throughout the semester.

During the annual Luau students create a traditional Hawaiian meal for their guests and perform traditional Hawaiian dance. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community can purchase tickets to attend this event. All proceeds go toward the club and the community.

It's so nice to know that traditions are brought to our community. With such diversity, UNLV is capable of bringing many cultures to campus.
