Let's Talk About Self Care

As we are approaching the end of the semester, it can be easy to sacrifice taking care of ourselves, especially with all the studying and final assignments on our plates. However, self-care is beneficial for our academic performance and mental health, so here are some tips for you to stay afloat!

1) Get Enough Sleep

It can be tempting to stay up for a few more hours to write that research paper, or one more hour to finish that episode on Netflix (no judgment). But getting a good night’s sleep allows your mind and body to recharge, leaving you with more energy to tackle the day!

2) Eat Nutritiously

We have heard the common phrase "food is fuel" which still rings true! Consuming healthier, balanced meals gives us the extra energy boost we need to conquer our day-to-day activities. It has actually been linked to faster information processing as well as increased memory retention and alertness!

3) Don’t Panic

Easier said than done, I know. Looking over all of the material you have to review, while also figuring out how (or if) you can ever memorize any of it, is enough to send anyone into a panic. Panicking will not help the situation though. It will actually serve as a detriment by distracting you and preventing you from using your energy in an efficient way. Do not let all of that information scare you! Deep breaths, you got this!

4) Spend Time Doing the Things You Love

Whether it's going out for a walk, listening to music, baking, or even spending time with friends, you deserve a break to do what makes you smile! All work and no play will only contribute to burnout. Remember to be kind to yourself and make time to have some "me time!"

5) Give Yourself Study Breaks

One may think that in order to study, every single moment must be spent reviewing information or taking notes. However, it can be easy to burn yourself ot while studying, so it is extremely important to take purposeful breaks in between! Doing so allows your body and mind to refresh, increasing your ability to focus on the task at hand.

6) Reward Yourself for Your Hard Work

As we all know, studying for finals is no easy feat. After you’re finished, it’s time to treat yourself for a job well done! Watch an episode or two of that show you have been planning to watch. Call or text your friends. Whatever makes you happy!
