Resource Rundown: UNLV Writing Center
At UNLV, there are so many different resources available to students right at their finger-tips, and the best part is that they are all free! Because the semester is coming to an end, students are writing their final essays and research papers that are due right in the next few days.
In my English class I have a research paper due on May 8th, so I decided to take initiative and get a head start on the essay. I wrote an 8-page rough draft, and decided to make an appointment at the Writing Center to get some criticism and guidance on my research paper. I called last minute, and I was lucky enough to get an appointment an hour later!!!
The Writing Center is a free resource provided by the English department, where students can schedule an appointment with a graduate assistant pursuing a master’s degree, or a Ph.D. in either English or Creative Writing. Students can make same-day appointments, or just walk in and see if anyone is available.
Students can walk in with a blank piece of paper and an essay prompt, and get help with brainstorming ideas, or go as far as bringing in a rough draft and get advice on what needs to be fixed. Not only do they help with essays, but they will also assist students with their applications and resumes! If you want to know more about my personal experience, just keep reading!
My appointment was at 12pm, and they advise you to arrive five to ten minutes early. I walked in and checked in at the front desk. They asked me to fill out a form, asking for my english professor’s name, and my concerns that I want to work on during my session. I was paired with a graduate assistant and we went into a private room. She first introduced herself and went over what we would be doing in the session. She read my essay out loud paragraph by paragraph, giving me advice on how I could fix the paragraph and make my argument stronger.
All in all, the Writing Center is a great resource for students to get criticism and tips on how to better their writing. Since I went to the writing center, I have felt more confident in my writing and have learned tips and tricks on how to use words more efficiently and better my argument. I totally suggest going to the Writing Center and getting free feedback!
