More the Eyes Can Meet in Greek Life
As a member of a panhellenic sorority at UNLV, you are open to many experiences, ranging from interactions with the Greek Life community as a whole to opportunities to volunteer with your organization. When I began my journey as a member of my sorority, I began to learn how to embrace my values, and being so involved gave me the opportunity to become a more well-rounded college student.
During the first semester of my freshman year, I noticed I was losing motivation in my academics, because of my consistent normal routine of going to school and going right back home. I was not happy with this dissatisfying daily norm. Since only a year of being in my sorority, I am absolutely sure I made the right decision. In only a year of being in my sorority, I am absolutely sure I made the right decision. In my sorority, I met people who would get me my first job, I managed to get a position on my sororities executive board, and I found the motivation to make the Dean’s Honor list for the College of Urban Affairs. All the benefits of being in my sorority, in general, are because of the amount of work I put in it and because of the people who constantly inspire me everyday. I also had the opportunity to meet some of my best friends that I know have pushed me to great lengths to achieve my goals.

I will admit, at times, it does become frustrating when society's perception Greek Life is a stigma that members of Greek Life are not the type of students that care about their education. When, on contrary, there are a lot of challenges that we face when we have to participate in philanthropies, exams, raise money for a fundraisers, and even sometimes balance working 40 hours a week of work. I recently had the chance to participate in the Lion Share Challenge, which is a silent auction where my sorority had the opportunity to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

In our silent auction, we were able to meet alumni from our chapter and I saw that I have connections in the real world, where jobs can be promising. In a sense, my organization isn’t just for the four years that I am in college, but it follows me once I graduate. I will always have the connections through my sorority to connect me with a job or even friendships that are promised to last even after college.
Even though it may seem that all we do are formal events, we even have the time to give back to our community, such as making time to cook dinner/breakfast at the Ronald McDonald House located here in Vegas! Being apart of an organization like this gives you the opportunity to give back to those who aren’t as fortunate as you and it made me open my eyes to become grateful for the things I usually take for granted.
I cannot see myself being even half the person I am today if it wasn’t for my sorority. So, if you are questioning becoming involved at UNLV, I recommend going for it! If that’s joining a sorority/fraternity in one of the councils we have here, joining UNLV CSUN, or even joining UNLVolunteers, I can assure you that you will not be the same person once you graduate. It will inspire you to grow as a person and along the way meet people that you will learn to call your best friends!
