Math Tutoring Centers

There are two kinds of people in this world. You either love math, or you hate it. There is no in between. If you are anything like me, you probably excelled in math all the way up until they decided to add the alphabet to it.

Math is a difficult subject. Lucky for you (and me) we have resources here on campus to help you through your math courses.

Take Advantage of Free Services

If “free” isn’t already your favorite word, it will be when it is time to enter college! I am no mathematician, but it doesn't take a lot to figure this out: free tutoring + you = a higher grade than if you didn’t get extra help. Like I said: math is hard for some of us, but for others, it’s as easy as pi (HAHA, GET IT?). Math experts who have gotten at least a B or higher in a specific class are encouraged to apply for the tutoring center to tutor students taking that class. These math experts can earn up to $15 an hour tutoring other students, while students can get tutoring for free. It is a win-win situation!

Taking Math in College

I remember taking my first college math class: Precalculus I. I took precalculus in high school and thought it would be relatively similar. I quickly found out this was not the case. Everything I thought I knew about precalculus was wrong, and my world (quite literally) took a 180-degree turn. Luckily, my frustrated-self turned around and - BEHOLD - the Lied Library was right there. I refused to accept defeat and went to tutoring. My experience could not have been more positive.

I remember walking up to the second floor with my lecture notes and homework. I felt judged for having to go to tutoring. I showed the math tutor what I had and when he asked what I needed help with, I picked up my pile of notes and said, “All of it.” My math tutor nodded, smiled and said, “Sure, let’s get started.” They were incredibly patient with me and explained the steps in a way that I understood. After mid-semester, my C+ in the class became a B. Now I could be a tutor, too! (Haha, just kidding.)

Knowing Your Resources

Tutoring is a free resource that is available for everyone. Whether it is for an introductory math course like Precalculus I (MATH 126) or Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists I (MATH 431), math tutoring is always available. There are three places you can go for math tutoring. For engineers and their rigorous math classes, there are specialized tutoring centers designated to engineering. If you are a student who is interested in higher level math classes, Math Bridge is a program which helps students place into these classes. The Math Bridge Program is located in the Academic Success Center. The last location, which is a personal favorite, is the second floor of the Lied Library. These tutoring centers have more than just math available, too! Every subject from Chemistry, Languages, and Physics can be found here, too.

It’s okay to ask for help. Use these resources while you have access to them, especially when they are free. You won’t regret it!
