Honors College Friendsgiving

It’s that time of year again! People get to go home and spend quality times with their loved ones. It's a time where we say goodbye to Spooky season, eat our weight in food, and greet the upcoming holiday season. For some of us, it is nothing new. We go to our homes that are a short 30-minute drive away and see our families like we do everyday. Others are not this fortunate. So, how can out-of-state students spend their Thanksgiving? Friendsgiving.

Friendsgiving is an opportunity for us to celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends and family who are not able to go home for the holiday. This is one of our most popular events in the Honors College. Every year, the Honors College hosts a big celebration for all their students. Our college consists of students from Vietnam, Hawai’i, Massachusetts, and everything in between. What a better way to give thanks than to spend time with your friends and making new memories! Plus, FREE FOOD!!!

This event might not be too special to most people, but to some, it means everything. One of my friends is from Vietnam. This was her first time here in the United States and has never experienced a Thanksgiving. Her family is thousands of miles away and she will not return home until after her degree is completed. Although her family is abroad, she really was able to connect with the culture here and experience a “family dinner,” even though her family could not be with her this year.

It was nice to take a step back from the madness of school and take a breath. It is important to stop and take a break every now and then to remember what is important in our lives. Friendsgiving is a way to relax, get to know people, and spend time with the ones we enjoy the most.
