How to Make Use of Your Breaks

This will most likely happen during one semester: you have one class at 10am

and. . . you don’t have another until 2:30 😒, or at least some version of this. This has happened to me on numerous occasions, and more frequently the father I went into my degree. This guide is to help you manage any breaks you might have in your academic schedule. Whether it be only an hour to a ridiculously long time, you can use these tips and tricks to make the most out of your break time.

1) Do homework! I know it sounds crazy to say it, but since you’re already on campus, go ahead and do some homework. I always amazed myself at how much homework I could get done in those few hours in between classes. This also means that you have less homework to do at HOME. So, you can relax and enjoy the rest of your time instead of stressing over that 5-page research paper that’s due in a week (don’t worry, we’ve all been there).

2) EAT! I cannot stress how important it is to eat during the day. Even those 15 minute breaks in between classes is enough time to get a granola bar down. Eating helps you focus in class and also makes you less tired in that boring Physics class that you are being forced to take. Whether you had a break in the morning, afternoon, or evening, eating is important to keep the body going.

3) Meet up with some friends! If you refuse to do any homework during your breaks because you have a break from classes for a reason, then met up with some of your buddies. No matter what y’all do, meeting up with some friends can be a sure-fire way of relaxing before going into that stressful class that you just cannot stand. Friends can also help you out with other classes if you want to dedicate your break time to academics.

4) Do NOTHING! Sometimes it’s nice to just do absolutely nothing on your breaks. This means do nothing academic and take the time to spend with yourself. The STEM side of campus has a plethora of areas to sit underneath the trees, or there are other sitting areas all across campus. Take this time to catch up on your social media, binge watch that tv show you’ve been meaning to watch, read a book, or even play some video games (a personal favorite). No matter what you do, take this time to just chillax and recharge your mind.

This is by no means a complete list as there are many more ways to spend your break time, but this list will at least give you SOME ideas as to how to spend those precious hours. Depending on how you made your schedule, the break can be a blessing or a curse, but you can always find SOMETHING to do in your break time. Now get out there and make that time useful!
