SWRC: The Perfect Stress Reliever

Let’s be real here, starting college is a real stressful time for a lot of people. Many of us are trying to balance an academic, work, and social life all at once! I don’t doubt that everyone will experience some type of stress while attending UNLV, but that’s okay because stress leads to personal growth and it means that you’re out there taking on challenges trying to reach your goals.

Studies show that low levels of the two neurotransmitters [glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)], can lead to mood disorders such as depression. But studies show that moderate exercise can can increase the levels of these neurotransmitters and increase mental resilience to challenges (Domonell, 2017).

At UNLV, I encourage you all to go to the Student Wellness and Recreational Center (SWRC) where there are resources for both your mental and physical health. In the SWRC, we have a Student Health Center that works as a quick care and a Wellness Zone that has massage chairs and personal trainers. We also have cardio equipment, multi-purpose activity courts, and a pool on the first floor. On the second floor we have free weights and over 65+ group fitness classes that take place every week! Finally we have a four court gym on the third floor and a ⅛ mile track that has a beautiful view of the strip and campus on the fourth floor.

Don’t feel overwhelmed guys! Visit the SWRC and take care of yourselves!
